SAGICOR NFA Women’s Cup Weekend and both the First and Reserve Team are in action. The First teams are at home at the University of Northumbria Coach Lane and welcome Ashington CFC Ladies while the NUWFC Reserves are at home to Percy Main LFC at Newcastle Pin Point FC at Cowgate Sports Centre.
The First team last played in a league game on 29th January when they played Mossley Hill Ladies FC at home and added another three points keeping them at the top of the Northern Combination League. NUWFC First Team Manager and Head Coach Michael Havelock has a full squad to choose from and all of the players are keen to make the starting eleven and get back on the pitch in a competitive game.
NUWFC First Team Manager Michael Havelock said “We have a break from league duties with the County Cup coming at a time when we need to play a competitive game. Due to recent postponements, the girls will be raring to play and keen to put their stamp on the cup. Winning is a habit and we hope that we can continue this habit and give the team confidence in the run in to the league title. We are focused on the County Cup and the next game against Ashington. Let’s hope that the team can push on and put in a good performance against what will be a tough and experienced opponent.”
Ashington Ladies Football Club currently sit top of the Northumberland County Women’s League having lost only one game all season, their opening day fixture against last season’s champions Lowick United. It is the club’s aim to gain promotion to the Northern Section of the Regional League and having since beaten Lowick in the return fixture the League title is now in the hands of Ashington. The management team of Chris Sayer & John Sparrow have set the girl’s a target – Win every remaining game & they win the title so NUWFC will have to make sure they realise that Ashington mean business when they visit Coach Lane on Sunday.
NUWFC First Team Captain Sarah Wilson said ‘A break from the league this weekend brings us up against Ashington in the NFA County Cup. From what we gather Ashington are a very tough squad with many experienced players. We must go out with the right attitude, play our own game and come away with nothing less than 3 points to ensure our place in the next round of the Cup.

NUWFC Reserve Team News
It was the 22nd January the last time the Reserve team played in the league when they played Stoke City Reserves, taking all three points following a 2 -1 win. With both First and Reserves fixtures cancelled last Sunday the two teams took advantage of the time and played a game. The First team won 5 – 1 but there were several members of the Reserve team who showed the management team that they are ready to make that vital step up should they be required to. Both Reserve Team Manager and Reserve Team Coach are very pleased with the commitment of their team recently and are looking forward to Sundays NFA game against Percy Main Ladies. But as everyone knows cup games can often shock and NUWFC know that they on Sunday they will have to be on top form if they want to progress to the next round.
NUWFC Reserve Team Manager Gary Appleton said ‘As expected this weekends fixture against Lincoln City was postponed due to a frozen pitch and with the first teams game also called off we all decided to arrange a serious full match day friendly against each other. It turned out to be a great game of football and give Adam and myself a chance to look at the new players who have come in to the squad and also try players in different positions which proved very beneficial to us , the game also give the 2 teams much needed match practice after the last 3 weeks games being postponed’
‘This Sunday give us a welcome break from our now busy league schedule and sees us up against Northumberland ladies league side Percy Main Ladies in the last 8 of the county cup who after looking at there league position and form will be a very hard game for us but a game which we are looking forward to and will be well prepared for and after watching the team play on Sunday against our very strong first team and have got to feel confident that if we take this performance into next weeks cup game could be looking at a semi -final place’
NUWFC Reserve Team Captain Amy Perch said ‘The Reserves are looking forward to finally getting back into action this weekend and what better way to do so than with a County Cup game. Percy Main have a good set up and are doing very well in their league so we know we cant afford to be complacent. The players will be treating it just as seriously as a league game, particularly with the potential of a game against the Firsts in the semi’s. We have an excellent reputation in the County Cup and with a difficult away fixture next weekend at Derby we have plenty to be working on . Good luck to the Firsts in their game against Cramlington lets work hard and have two teams in the next round.
